Looking For Messiest House In Arlington
Hi Maggie and Lari - Thank you for your comments! Please let me assure you that it is not my intention to embarrass or make a mockery of the true problem of clutter. I intend to respect the privacy of contest entrants and though three hours with a professional organizer and a gift certificate for supplies won't solve the problem, hopefully the winner will get some real advice, helpful suggestions, and an action plan to at least get on the right track to organizing. My goal was to raise awareness that folks who struggle with organizing are not alone and that it is in fact a real issue that many families face, and to hopefully offer some valuable help. Having the public participate in choosing a winner is an effort to bring folks in to the Town Day booth so that I can educate them and engage them in conversations about their own organizing challenges - big or small. Get Organized for Spring Cleaning
Congrats to all who got started this weekend, and also to the future parents-to-be. Big life changes often bring about a need to get organized, so it's great to hear that the 'nesting' instinct works!
Get Organized for Spring Cleaning
Daylight savings is this weekend, and with the temperatures rising into the 50s, there's bound to be a bout of Spring Fever hitting Arlingtonians. With Spring Fever often comes thoughts about spring cleaning. Time to open up the windows, air out the house, and tackle some of those cleaning and organizing projects around the home. If you're gearing up for some work, here are some ideas to get an organized plan of attack together and get everyone in the family involved: - With a notebook in hand, take a tour around your house. Identify spots that need special cleaning attention (maybe a rug to steam-clean or some draperies to launder). Also find things that need repair or updating (maybe a fresh coat of paint on a door or some WD40 and tightened hardware on the kitchen cabinets). Make a list and then prioritize the items. Taking them on one at a time can make everything less overwhelming, and you're less likely to overlook something important. - Assign tasks to family members and involve children in those that are age-appropriate. Get creative with rewards; maybe a family night at the movies or a dinner out somewhere special. - Take stock of your cleaning supplies. This is a great opportunity to transition to more environmentally-friendly products, too. There are numerous resources online about which cleaning products are safer for your families yet still effective at cleaning. I'm always available to answer your organizing questions and challenges, so ask away! Happy Spring!
"Shop Arlington First" working?
Hi Kristie, Shop Arlington First is a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored program with the goal of supporting local businesses in Arlington. I believe the program is just a couple of years old at this point, and is still in its growing phase. There is a bunch of information available on the Chamber of Commerce website at http://www.arlcc.org/sa1/about.htm including where you can buy the gift certificates and which shops in town are signed up to accept them. It's great that you are interested in the program, and I am sure the Chamber would welcome your suggestions! Hope this helps! Wendy
The Financial Benefits of Getting Organized
Thanks for the great feedback, all. I'd be curious to hear what the best thing you "find" is during your next organizing session! My advice is to pick a focused problem area and work on decluttering and improving that first. Something manageable, like your toolbox (Tammy) or your pantry (Shelly).
